Trinity Outreach

The mission of the Outreach Committee at Trinity Church is to provide opportunities for parishioners of all ages to participate in charitable giving through projects that engage us as a community, both physically and spiritually, with an eye toward maintaining a balance in meeting local, national, and international needs.

To accomplish this, the committee coordinates outreach activities spearheaded by various parish members so that collections of goods, services, or cash donations are distributed over the course of the entire calendar year, are of sufficient variety to speak to our different hearts, and are divided between long-term commitments and one-time opportunities.  Because giving of “time, talent, and treasure” to those in need is a spiritual necessity for all Christians, the Outreach Committee plans to have one, and usually only one, opportunity before the congregation at all times, with goals, deadlines, and response clearly published.  While striving for flexibility, the committee endeavors to distribute funds allotted in the parish budget as “seed money” to pay for raw materials that maker larger parish projects possible or in way that allow needy recipients to move toward self-sufficiency rather than to encourage dependence.  Donations will be through the auspices of reputable organizations.  The Outreach Committee invites participation at all levels and keeps before the community the awareness of our responsibility to respect the dignity of those receiving gifts as children of God and of our vulnerability since any of us may at any time be in the position of needing to accept gifts rather than giving out of abundance.  We pray that our hearts may be open to God’s love that it then shines through us joyfully in service to others.

2007 (March through December) Outreach Activities

• Trinity’s food pantry continues to offer food to needy families, thanks to the generosity of our parishioners
• 16 complete Easter meals were delivered to Grace Smith House for Battered Women and Children during Holy Week.
• Trinity parishioners were invited to participate in the Vassar Haiti Project’s annual art sale and auction in April
• Contributions to Seabury Western Seminary and St. Nicholas Seminary, Ghana
• $400 contribution to sponsor one child for one week at the Rural & Migrant overnight camp
• Parishioners donated towels and water bottles for the Rural & Migrant Ministry overnight camp
• Lunches for 25 Rural & Migrant Ministry daycampers were provided and delivered to the Union Presbyterian Church in Newburgh
• Trinity is supporting the efforts of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh and EpiscoBuild in the restoration of a house in Newburgh, NY.  A contribution of $2,500 has been made and Trinity parishioners are invited to participate in work days.  Contact Wayne Bunker (226-7734) for details on how to participate.
• Relay for Life
• School supplies collected for needy families in the area and donated to Brinkerhoff Elementary School
• Crop Walk
• Trinity Haiti Partnership – a new committee has formed to pursue an ongoing ministry with St. Paul’s Church in the village of Chermaitre, Haiti.  Contact Deb Hillard (896-1207) or Pam Bunker (226-7734) for further information.
• Thanksgiving food baskets will be donated and assembled to offer 25 meals to needy area families. 
• Christmas gifts will be collected for the children of mothers in the Beacon Correctional Facility; working in cooperation with Christ Church Poughkeepsie
• Trinity parishioners participate as Salvation Army bell ringers each year

2008 Outreach

New suggestions for Outreach opportunities are continually sought and all are welcome to join in, either for a single event or to serve on the committee. Please contact Susan Quade (632-2890) for further information.

The Outreach Committee anticipates continuing several ministries, including support of the Rural & Migrant Ministry summer camp for children of migrant workers; food baskets for Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas; donations to seminaries; and Christmas ministries geared towards our area’s neediest citizens; and we anticipate several new Outreach opportunities.  In the coming year, Trinity Church will be actively involved in an on-going ministry with the people of Chermaitre, Haiti.  Please watch your bulletins and newsletters for full information.

The needs in our own community are great, as well as reaching beyond our own borders. With that in mind, the Outreach Committee prayerfully thanks our congregation for the generosity, goodwill, and enthusiasm that is so abundant.

Prior Years:  2006 Activities

• Contribution to the Leaders for the Church campaign of the General Theological Seminary, designated for the Desmond Tutu Education Center
• Contribution to sponsor one child for one week at the Rural & Migrant Ministry overnight camp
• Parishioners donated towels and washcloths for campers at the Rural & Migrant Ministry overnight camp
• Lunches for 25 Rural & Migrant Ministry daycampers were provided and delivered by parishioners
• Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh and EpiscoBuild celebrated the completion of the house at 156 Dubois Street in Newburgh with a neighborhood party.  Trinity parishioners baked more than 30 dozen cookies for the event.  Wayne Bunker volunteered many hours to this project.
• Relay for Life
• School supplies were donated by parishioners and delivered to Brinkerhoff Elementary School.
• “Les Petits Chanteurs,” the children’s choir and string quintet of Holy Trinity Music School of Port-au-Prince, Haiti performed at Vassar College.  All monies collected from the ticket sales were donated to the Music School.
• 29 cartons of collected toiletries, fabric, and clothing were sent to Haiti. 
• Rite 13 students participated in the annual Crop Walk in October
• Trinity Haitian Art Sale raised $12,593.00 towards the building of the school in Chermaitre. 
• Thanksgiving food baskets were donated and assembled to offer 25 meals to needy area families.
• Parishioners donated more than 100 Christmas gifts for the children of mothers in the Beacon Correctional Facility and our Sunday school children assembled 150 goody bags filled with candy and treats.  Working in cooperation with Christ Church Poughkeepsie, more than 200 gifts were delivered to the prison on December 6.
• 20 stuffed animals and dolls were donated to needy children at the Waring School in Poughkeepsie
• Church school children created potpourri jars for the residents of Wingate Nursing Home on December 17, which were delivered during the Christmas caroling at Wingate
• Trinity parishioners donated hours to ring the Salvation Army bells
• A generous parishioner donated 6 large shopping bags filled with hand-made crocheted lap blankets, baby blankets, hats, and mittens
